One such recipe is for boulet, a type of dumpling made with fish or chicken, flavoured with Chinese five-spice, and served in a light broth. “This recipe has been in our family for generations,” says Mrs Chan, an MCSV member. “My grandmother used to make it for us when we were kids, and now I make it for my grandchildren. It’s a way to keep her memory alive and to share our culture with the younger generation.”

Cooking at Home: Tips and Tricks

For those who want to try their hand at Mauritian-Chinese cooking, there are plenty of resources available. Many of the ingredients used in traditional recipes can be found at local Asian markets in Victoria. For those new to this cuisine, we recommend starting with simple dishes like fried rice or noodle stir-fry, gradually experimenting with more complex flavours and techniques.
